Ulli Curry

This is an easy to make side dish for a typical Kerala breakfast. In my race to office I try to make an easy dish like 'Ulli Curry/Shallots Curry' in the morning so that I get time to prepare my lunch too.


Appam and chapati can be complimented with this simple side dish.

  1. Shallots/pearl onions - 20 - 25 No:s(Sliced lengthwise)
  2. Greenchilly - 2 No:s(sliced lengthwise)
  3. Chilly powder - 1/4 tspn
  4. Coriander powder /4 tspn
  5. turmeric powder - 2 pinch
  6. Coconut milk - 1/2 cup
  7. Coconut oil - 2 tspn
  8. Whole red chilly - 1 No:
  9. Mustard seeds
  10. Curry leaves - 1 sprig
  11. Water - 1/2 cup

How to make

Heat coconut oil in a wok / kadai,splutter mustard seeds, add whole red chilly and curry leaves. Add sliced onion and green chilly.Saute well . Add chilly powder,coriander powder,turmeric powder.Saute till the raw taste of the powders leave. Add water and cook the onions well.when the nnions are done add salt and let it boil for 5 minutes. Add cocnut milk and cok in law flame for 2-3 minutes. Serve with appam,idiyappam or chapthi.
